Most importantly, are you happy while you create? Are you happy with the results? I love abstract because it barely has limitations, in my opinion. If you want to try to avoid filling in the whole page, I suggest either using broader painters tape to shrink the working space, or draw a border to work within. Hope this helps! :)

Regarding filling up a whole page. I used to do that regularly. I found that if I just make a mark somewhere on the page, I can usually keep a border of blank space between the formation of my drawing and the edge of the paper/canvas.

I've experienced dormancy a few times in the last 15 years. I tried to reach the surface recently by taking a watercolor sketch book upstairs with me to my in-law's. I tend to get creative while chatting, lol. I ended up doing one painting with hues of blue and green. I was planning to edge the 'lines' with black ink later, but my mother-in-law said, "No, leave it as it is. See that line there? That's our Creek. See that one? That's the road. That area there is the marsh." I raised my brows and said, okay then. It stays just the way it is. I guess I'll have to frame it for them, lol.

I do like using sketchbooks which suit the medium I'm using, especially markers! The better the match to my pens, the more smoothly the lines flow across the paper. The more smoothly they do so, the more at ease I am and the better I feel about the final result.
